1. THE WHO?
Matilda Phiri is a multiple award-winning Malawian author, blogger, poet, model, actress, and entrepreneur based in Blantyre. She holds a degree in Political Leadership with a minor in Social Work from Catholic University of Malawi.
She did her primary education at Nayisi and Misesa LEA Schools and later attended Blantyre Secondary School. Matilda is the author of six books and a passionate storyteller whose work continues to grow both locally and internationally.

2. THE WHAT?
Matilda writes short stories, poems, folktales, essays, articles, movie scripts, and radio plays. Her work explores themes of society, morality, personal struggles, culture, love, and life lessons, often reflecting everyday African experiences.

3. THE HOW?
Matilda writes in a clear, engaging, and reflective storytelling style, blending simple language with powerful messages. Her stories often carry moral lessons and social commentary, using relatable characters and situations that connect deeply with readers.

4. THE WHY?
“I write to inspire, teach, and reflect society.”
Matilda believes storytelling is a powerful tool for educating, guiding, and encouraging people to reflect on life, values, and choices.

5. THE WHEN?
Writing since 2005 while studying at Blantyre Secondary School.

Milestones:
2011: Began publishing articles and short stories in Malawi News.
2013: Started writing weekend folktales in a column for Malawi News.
2015: Became the first female winner of the Malawi Writers Union Peer Gynt Children’s Book Competition with her story Grace the Village Girl.
2016: Won the Malawi Writers Union / First Capital Bank Short Story Award.

2017: Won the National Literary Award with her

2025: International recipient of the CORA LABAF

6. THE WHERE?

    I'll never forget the sweet old college days when I pursued my medical course in Pharmacy, and my friend James used to give me eggs. I remember vividly how he used to say it, even though almost seven years have passed. "I've laid four eggs today, and what time are you coming to my room to get them?" He would say, and I would burst into tears of gratitude. I thoroughly enjoyed them and always thanked him for his kindness.
