Painful experiences such as abuse, neglect, violence, loss of a parent, rejection, poverty, or growing up in an unstable environment can leave emotional scars that affect a person for many years. While some people appear strong on the outside, deep inside they may still be struggling with fear, anger, sadness, low self-esteem, or trust issues rooted in childhood experiences. Trauma affects people differently. Some become withdrawn and afraid of relationships, while others develop anger, anxiety, depression, or destructive behaviors.
