Malawi's President Promotes Arts

MALAWI’S PRESIDENT PROMOTES ARTS

It is good to note that our president is promoting and appreciating arts in the country. Malawi as a country is far much behind in the Arts sector. We do not have a lot movies to offer internationally like our friends do in Nigeria, South Africa, etc. because we do not get much support from the government as compared to other countries.

As of late, trending pictures surfaced on social media pages of a Malawian UK-based standup comedian Dalitso Chaponda at the State House with Malawi’s President Dr Lazarus Chakwera. Of course Dalitso was with his colleague, a Ugandan comedian, Patrick Salvado. This was something major as he confirmed through his Facebook page that he was indeed invited at the State House by the president to encourage him in his career as he was putting Malawi on the map. Dalitso is one of the greatest comedians we have ever had in Malawi who has also gone popular internationally. His standup sets are unique and very comical. He came third in the Britain’s Got Talent Television show. Malawi is known all over the world through his art. He was truly appreciated by the president for putting Malawi on the map.

We need more artists in Malawi like Dalitso who can put the country on the map. Fortunately, we have so many artists in Malawi who are very good, such as musicians, actors, writers, poets, visual artists who lack support to further develop their career. For example, many writers have so many books that they have written but fail to publish them due to lack of financial support e.g. for printing the books and for musicians, in order to have good studio music, they need money to pay for good studios. The film makers as well need support from government just like in Nigeria where they receive funding from government through the Arts Council, which Malawi does not have. Our colleagues in the football scene have a national sports council which supports them in their activities.

In the meantime, the artists themselves are not staying idle.  They drafted a bill and submitted it to the parliament, therein, making a request for an arts council in the name of (NAHEC), which is, National Arts and Heritage Council, to be passed into a bill in order to be supported by the government. May the authority in question pass this bill for the sake of arts development in Malawi. Through this, we shall put our country on the map forever.
