My Advice to African Presidents-The Friday Shaker

Africans are known for their peaceful and humane nature, which is why Malawi is often referred to as "the warm heart of Africa" due to its warm welcome to visitors. Africans have a strong culture of respecting others, and this is reflected in the concept of 'Ubuntu,' which emphasizes the importance of acting in a humane and considerate manner towards others. This traditional African concept holds significant value for African presidents, as embracing it could contribute to the development of our continent. Leadership should be seen as a loving relationship with our followers, guided by the Ubuntu spirit.

An individual with the Ubuntu spirit is open and available to others, feeling a sense of humiliation when witnessing the torture and oppression of fellow human beings, as discussed by Desmond Tutu in 1999. Africans expect their leaders to be open-minded and tolerant of different viewpoints within society, while also respecting the rights and freedoms of the people as democratic principles. Leaders must be considerate when making decisions that could have a negative impact on citizens. A person with the Ubuntu spirit will always take into account how others will feel before taking any action. Our presidents need this Ubuntu spirit to guide their administrations. Embracing the Ubuntu spirit helps presidents gain trust, respect, and love from the people. African presidents should not abuse their office to satisfy their personal needs. Instead, they should prioritize the welfare of the people over personal gain, as this approach will be more beneficial.

There is a need for accountability and transparency from the presidents, which can be achieved through embracing the Ubuntu spirit. No African president should be wealthier than their own country, as it would imply that the president does not have the best interests of the country at heart. Many African roads are in poor condition and require improvement. Presidents should be accountable for their actions and transparent in their governance. They should strive to champion good governance and development, as they witness the progress made by their counterparts in Europe. Why can't we do the same to develop Africa?

Corruption must be eradicated if Africa is to achieve development. For instance, in Malawi, food prices are very high compared to neighboring countries, and the economy is in a dire state. Ending corruption in Malawi would contribute to its development. Corruption is rampant in Africa, and without it, we could have made significant progress by now in 2023. Unlike Europeans, we lack special homes and supportive policies for our elderly population. While we claim poverty as the reason, some African presidents own private jets and vast properties. This unfortunate situation prevails in our African continent. Corruption also affects transportation in Africa. We have poorly maintained roads and inadequate modes of transport, such as efficient trains, aircraft, and large public buses like those found in Europe. What hinders us from acquiring and managing such transport systems?

Moreover, some African presidents are known to demand money from various statutory organizations, such as electricity boards and water boards, using their positions of power. Such practices should not occur in Africa, as they hinder development and demonstrate a lack of the Ubuntu spirit. The funds from these large corporations could be used to create employment opportunities for the youth and address the high unemployment rate in our continent. Government funds should not be abused; instead, they should be utilized to help develop the younger generation.

In conclusion, African presidents should embrace the Ubuntu spirit before it is too late and earn the trust of their people. The Ubuntu spirit should guide them throughout their leadership, as it carries an inherent obligation. Leadership should resemble a loving relationship between the presidents and the citizens. Accountability and transparency should be promoted. It is crucial to listen to the concerns of the masses and act in their best interest, rather than pursuing personal agendas or desires. Tolerance is essential in working for the nation's welfare. Strive to strengthen the economy and reduce the unemployment rate. Remember, the people are watching your every step, and they possess the power to remove you if you fail to meet their expectations. Your future lies in their hands.
