Governance Article-Qualities and Types oF a Political Leader

By Matilda Phiri

Political leaders acquire their positions through elections, exercising power by representing constituencies in democratic states. However, even in non-democratic countries, non-politicians also create and enforce laws. Politicians who fail to fulfill their campaign promises are often despised as liars, while those who fulfill their commitments are loved and respected.

There are four types of political leaders: True leaders, Demagogues, Ordinary leaders, and Citizen Leaders. True leaders, or statesmen, hold themselves accountable for the commitments they make through their decisions and actions. They possess the ability to establish new states, promote peace, and rise above conflicts. They are dedicated to the survival and well-being of their nations. Their qualities, such as their forward-thinking approach and ability to inspire hope, are essential for gaining voter support.

Demagogues, on the other hand, attain power by appealing to the desires and prejudices of ordinary people. They manipulate emotions and often employ deceptive tactics. These leaders are often chaotic, warmongering, and have destructive ends. Historical figures like Adolf Hitler and Idi Amin exemplify this type of leadership.

Ordinary politicians lack exceptional vision and outstanding abilities. They often struggle to prioritize ethical issues and are prone to taking political risks. Their primary focus is often on getting reelected, and they can be susceptible to corruption.

Citizen Leaders, while not holding public elected office, actively engage in politics and contribute positively to their countries. Occasionally, individuals decisively influence the course of political events without holding an official position in the government. Examples include Chakufwa Chihana, who played a significant role in the removal of Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda from power, and Martin Luther King Jr., who influenced the American Civil Rights movement.

In conclusion, it is crucial for voters in government elections to carefully analyze the different types of leaders in our society. This analysis helps us avoid electing individuals who hinder development. Politicians should prioritize transparency and accountability to foster good governance and facilitate progress. Let us not be easily deceived.
