WHY MALAWI?
WHY MALAWI?
Why Malawi? A country as small as it is, with poor people but a lot of issues. I cannot believe as a nation, we are still failing to fight corruption which has destroyed our small beautiful country with all resources to make us wealthy. Malawi has got fertile soil which if used properly, can make us an exporting country but most land is underutilised because of rampant corruption.
We read every day in the newspapers of huge corruption scandals happening in different government departments and ministries but nothing is done to these corrupt people and yet the money embezzled is the tax payer’s money which is meant for the country's development. This has happened in Malawi, where a government ministry abused tractor funds and only apologised in the newspaper for their actions and yet we are talking of billions of Malawi Kwachas. How can we develop if we are abusing government funds like personal money? No way! It’s impossible. There are so many corruption cases that have happened in Malawi. It is high time we see an active role played by the government by arresting whoever is involved in corruption and the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) should be at the forefront fighting corruption in all government departments. The corruption cases need not to take much time in court because much evidence is already available. But instead, what do we see? The cases delay for many years and months. This is not good at all.
Why Malawi? Why us? What did we do?
The year 2019 will be an unforgettable one in the history of Malawi and I can state that it is the worst year ever that Malawi has seen after attaining democracy in 1994. This was the year Malawians expected to see a change in Political leadership but the change did not happen and a lot of people were frustrated, still crying with regret for their vote. They had faith that the elections were the only way that would make them see the change but what happened during the 2019 Tripartite elections left most Malawians in shock. Citizens fought hard to see justice on what exactly happened and finally God answered their prayers when the courts judged that citizens should vote again and there was a new government of Tonse Alliance.
Malawi’s political nature is not good at all and not even conducive for businesses. This is so, because every time after the elections, there’s post electoral demonstrations in our small streets which are detrimental to the economic growth of the country. This has greatly affected our economy and no wonder we are now seeing the depreciation of Kwacha every day against the United States dollar. For example, the closure of COMESA international trade fair in 2019, which this country also depends on to help in bringing forex was affected as well due to the political after-electoral instabilities in the country. Thank God now the international trade fair has resumed again. The COMESA trade fair is good for this country’s exposure.
Still in 2019, we saw the closure of shops almost every day due to demonstrations which was not a good sign for development. It was like we were going backwards instead of moving forward. Malawi was in for self-inflicted destruction which only required an urgent solution or otherwise we were going to destroy our small country. This is the only Malawi we have, let us protect it.
But why Malawi? Why us?
This is 2022, things are getting worse every day and life in Malawi now is very expensive. Rentals are high, fuel is expensive, food is expensive, to buy land is expensive too. What shall we do and what are we doing? Yes, this is a global issue in terms of economic problems but what are we doing as a country to help our citizens who voted? This is what Malawians are now complaining about every day because they want to see the government taking positive action. Please come back to your Manifesto, citizens voted for this new alliance government to see a big change in how the government runs its systems. Start those factories and mega farms this is the time that we need them. Let’s invest much in Agriculture if we are successful in this area we are good to go as a country in this global economic era. And we will never complain again saying ‘Why Malawi.’
Nice write-up!!
