Hare Fools His Friends-Folktale

                                              THE HARE FOOLS HIS FRIENDS

                                                         BY MATILDA PHIRI

There was once a Hare who organized a competition with other animals to prove to them that he was strong.  He went to the elephant and told him to fight with him. “My dear friend Elephant, do you know that I am very stronger than you? In a tug of war despite being small I would win!” The elephant laughed at the Hare, asking him, why he was so confident.

“I am very big and also am a strong animal. I’d definitely win”, said the Elephant. After sometime while arguing, the elephant agreed to compete with the Hare to see who was very stronger.

The Hare told the elephant to stay on one side and that he would go on the other side. When the Hare went on the other side, he found a lion preparing his meat and he greeted him. The Hare told him the same thing he told the Elephant to fight with him. The lion laughed at him.

“My friend Hare, I’m way stronger than you. In fact you should be scared of me!”

The Hare managed to convince the lion and he agreed to compete with him. He told him to stay on the other side while he went the other side.

The hare was lucky that his plan worked very well because there was bush in between the Elephant and Lion's side. The two big animals did not know that the Hare had set them up and that they would not be competing with him. The  Hare was hiding in the bush and whistled. Both the animals started pulling the rope against each other while the Hare just laughed. They were both surprised if they were really pulling the Hare or another big animal because of the strength.

The two big animals got tired and started sweating. Unfortunately, the rope broke and both the animals bumped into each other at the centre. They were both surprised and angry at the Hare for fooling them. They immediately looked where the Hare was hiding to kill him. When the Hare heard that he wanted to be killed, he jumped out of the bush where he was and started running away to the deep forest. They failed to catch him as they were so tired from the match.
